Berkeley Breathed announced today that he is giving up his Sunday comic strip Opus to focus on children's books instead. That announcement signals the end of Opus, the charming penguin who has entertained comics readers for nearly 30 years, starting with Bloom County. Though Breathed has retired the character before, this time, he says, he means it.

Kat, On Thursday morning we my husband and I looked outside to see out beautiful yellow and white cat we named Lemondrop lying in the sunshine. Something had been off with him for the past few weeks but he never mentioned that he was sick. One neighbor's son had named him Bogo. But it mostly understood that Lemondrop was out cat. We fed him made sure he had fresh water to drink both summer and winter, and it the weather was really bad we brought him in. You could here him purr for miles around. He enjoyed being with the neighbor dogs and playing with baby sister Molly. It is heart wrenching to see these animals look for him. And saddest of all is my husband was unable to give him the proper burial he deserved. Yes Lemondrop was for all intense and purposes a feral cat, one that loved to snuggle and purr and be patted and had never ever been miss treated. Because we live in Goochland county we would like to adopt another cat. We have a indoor cat LittleBit who was dumped her shortly after Lemondrop, but his front claws have been removed, and we worry that he won't know how to fend for himself. Gene has said that he would like to find a yellow and white cat, that enjoys being outside with all the creatures looking after his territory, and being around a big brother (cat) and sister (dog). I'm sending you a picture of these amazing animals. Because they have touched so many lives in a positive way. Thank you for all you good work and God Bless you.
